ProtectaFlex Detect double‑contained piping system by Aliaxis

The Challenge

Salinen Austria AG required an extremely reliable and chemically resistant solution to replace an existing dosing line used for a clean‑in‑place (CIP) application. As one of Europe’s leading salt producers, the company operates a state‑of‑the‑art, highly automated facility in Ebensee, producing approximately 1.2 million tonnes of salt per year from around four million cubic metres of brine.

The key requirement was the safe transfer of 96% sulfuric acid within the existing plant infrastructure. To minimise residual risk, the system had to include a leak detection function capable of triggering an alarm to the control system even in the event of very small liquid leaks. 

The Solution

The newly developed ProtectaFlex Detect double‑pipe system was selected for this application. Featuring a double‑walled design with integrated leak monitoring, ProtectaFlex Detect provides a highly reliable and permanently safe media transfer solution.

The flexible inner hose made of PTFE ensures complete chemical resistance to highly concentrated sulfuric acid, while the outer protective jacket made of polyurethane (PU) provides the required pressure resistance and effective mechanical protection. 

Thanks to its flexible hose design, the 35‑metre dosing line could be easily adapted to on‑site conditions, enabling a precise and efficient installation.

The Realisation

Installation was carried out by the experienced plant engineering company AIM. In close coordination with Aliaxis Germany, all system components were supplied and fully assembled on site. Aliaxis technical field service supported the installation process, ensuring that all project‑specific requirements were addressed directly during execution. 

Connection to the existing dosing equipment was achieved easily using standard ProtectaFlex Detect fittings with crimped connections. Commissioning of the leak detection system was also straightforward, as it could be seamlessly integrated into the existing local process control system. A final pressure and leakage test was successfully completed. 

The entire implementation was completed efficiently without any disruption to ongoing operations at Salinen Austria AG.

With the ProtectaFlex Detect system, a highly reliable, safe and sustainable double‑contained piping solution was implemented, ensuring long‑term, trouble‑free transfer of sulfuric acid concentrations of up to 98%. The project clearly demonstrates the effectiveness and reliability of ProtectaFlex Detect in demanding industrial applications. 

Salinen Austria AG now benefits from a robust dosing line that provides the highest level of operational and environmental safety, thanks to its high‑quality material combination and integrated leak detection system. 

The customer is extremely satisfied with both the delivered solution and the technical support provided by Aliaxis. The ProtectaFlex Detect line impressed during installation as well as during ongoing operation, and future replacement projects are planned to be implemented using this system.
